CLITHEROE Castle’s charity music festival has raised thousands of pounds for cancer suffers.

A group of East Lancashire DJs organised and performed Beats Cancer at Clitheroe Castle on Saturday to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Duncan Dickins, one of the performers and organisers, said he felt very overjoyed about the festival. He said: “We had a lot of people turn out over the course of the weekend – even in the rain. We wanted to have something for all the family at the concert. Obviously some people came down to enjoy the techno, but we wanted to offer something to everyone.”

The festival had a main stage where big names such as Paul Taylor and Bontan performed house music sets, and a second stage of funk and soul performed by Clitheroe Soul Club and other local talent.

The four DJ’s including Sara Rushton, Nick Kennerley and Robert Valinakis who organised the event, had all known someone who has been affected by cancer.

Mr Dickins said: “It was important for me to do this, I lost my dad to cancer 21 years ago when he was 44 – I was only 18 at the time.

“Me and the other DJs thought, what could we do? we wanted to raise awareness about cancer research and help raise funds.”

More than £6,000 was raised on the weekend, with all the money going towards Cancer Research UK.

Mary Robinson, leader of Clitheroe Town Council, was pleased to see the castle being used.

“Using the castle constantly and entertaining people is brilliant.”

Jenny Murgatroyd, senior local fundraiser manager for Cancer Research UK, said: “This massive amount of money will go to research and people getting treatment.”
