A GROUP of pupils and staff at Oakhill College are to take on the ultimate cycling challenge next month as they pedal from Lands End to John O’Groats.

Pupils Jacob McHugh, Daniel Riding and William Singleton will be leading the way, joined by teachers David Peel, Charles Jepson and John Kirkham, making a very diverse team aged between 14 and 68.

The group from the Whalley school have already raised £570 for the school’s three charities, CAFOD, Macmillan and Rainbows.

A spokesman for Oakhill College said: “Cycling challenges are now an annual tradition at Oakhill, with many Oakhill pupils, staff and parents completing five Coast to Coast routes in the past five years.

“This August a group of pupils and staff will be undertaking the ultimate British cycling challenge of the ‘end to end’ route from Lands End to John O’ Groats.

“The ‘LE JOG’ route we will be following is 951 miles long and will be completed over two weeks. Our daily journeys will range between 60 and 90 miles.

“As well as the cycling challenge we have also set ourselves the goal of fundraising £3,000 for our three school charities.

“These charities were chosen this year by our own senior school pupils and together they serve a huge range of worthwhile causes, from cancer and bereavement support in our own and other local communities, to international aid for those in need elsewhere.”

“All donations are gratefully received. We would also welcome sponsorship from businesses, and can offer some banner space on our support trailer.

“Volunteer drivers are still also required, along with anyone who may be able to help promote our challenge.

One of the support vehicles accompanying the cyclist on their journey will be a Leyland tractor supplied by Gerard Singleton.

The tractor will stay close behind the cycling group for two weeks throughout the length of Great Britain.
