Wagon leaves a white old mess on East Lancashire highways

MYSTERY: Some of the paint left on North Valley Road, Colne. The trail appears to run from Hyndburn to North Yorkshire MYSTERY: Some of the paint left on North Valley Road, Colne. The trail appears to run from Hyndburn to North Yorkshire

A TRAIL of white paint, measuring 50 miles from East Lancashire to North Yorkshire, has left highways experts baffled.

Roads from Hyndburn to Thirsk have been affected by the mystery dribbles, which were first spotted last week on the A679, just past Huncoat.

The trail continued on the route along Vivary Way, Colne, and the A56 through Foulridge, Kelbrook, Sough, Earby and Thornton-in-Craven.

The leakage, left either in dribbles or patches on the carriageway, continues along the A59 through Skipton and over the Yorkshire Dales to the outskirts of Harrogate.

The splatters then head north along the B6161 towards Killinghall, joining the A61 between Ripley and Ripon, before the trail goes cold at the A1 turnoff near Leeming.

One driver said: “It looks just like a line-painting machine that’s gone wrong, because the paint follows one distinct route.

“You would have thought someone would have noti-ced their mistake, given the amount of miles they’ve travelled.”

Road bosses said they had no plans to remove the unexplained markings, unless they were proving to be a road hazard.

Colin Badminton, assis-tant area highways manager at Lancashire County Council, said: “The council is aware of the sporadic splashes of white paint on the roads mentioned.

“The paint will eventually wear off the road naturally, and we are not planning to remove it, unless it is considered to be causing a safety hazard for motorists.

“It appears that the paint may have splashed on to the road from a wagon travelling along this route.

“We do not believe it was a county council vehicle.”

Highways Agency spokesman Nigel Ellis said that they had received no complaints along the routes they manage.

Are we sure it wasn't whitewash on its way down to the government?
After all they've probably run out of their usual supply.

Has it really left highway experts baffled?
I would have thought that anyone with an IQ you can count on one hand could figure out what caused it.

It's a white old mystery. Police say, " We're baffled! " - so, nothing new there.

Don't tell me someone from the council actually went to Thirsk to measure it.

so this story says its a wagon?.have you got proof telegraph or are you just guessing?.some of these roads have 7.5 ton limits on them .the b6161 has and is well policed so wagons dont go on them.if its an accident its a wagons fault.if its white paint its a wagons fault.lets blame everything on wagons.get your facts right telegraph.

i think there was some paint leaking from a moving vehicle..wild guess...somebody obviously knows it was them.how can you miss paint all over your car/van ect.
is there a challenge to find the culprits?
if this was csi we would have some of the paint in the lab pronto and be able to tell who exactly made it,bought it, transported it.but its lancashire,we have to make a brew and talk crap.its paint,it will go,nobody is stupid enough to admit it or clean it up.meanwhile....look outside your house and see dogs sh1tting everywhere and not bat an eyelid.
