A PENSIONER died after being struck by a car driven by a speeding driver, an inquest heard.

Keith Robinson, 69, of Leamington Avenue, Burnley, died after being hit by a Vauxhall Corsa being driven by Daniel Mills in Albert Road, Colne, on February 4, 2016.

The inquest at Burnley Magistrates Court heard Mr Robinson had been crossing the road opposite the Municipal Hall, when the car struck him at around 10.20pm.

It had been travelling at a speed of between 36 and 42mph in the 30mph zone when it hit Mr Robinson, although Mills had been clocked driving at 66mph over a pelican crossing near to the scene.

The Corsa had failed to stop with Mr Robinson suffering serious injuries. He died at the scene just a day after he had turned 69.

A post-mortem examination by pathologist Dr Charles Wilson concluded that Mr Robinson died of multiple injuries.

PC John Birch of Lancashire Police’s collision investigation unit, said: “The Vauxhall Corsa hit Mr Robinson at an impact speed of 36 to 42mph, although the speed on impact was most likely higher.

“CCTV footage from an Albert Road premises shows the Corsa driving over a pelican crossing near to the scene at 66mph.”

Mr Robinson had been at the Pendle Beer Festival at the Colne Muni with family and friends and was walking to the bus stop when the incident happened.

Driver Mills was arrested and later pleaded guilty at Burnley Crown Court to causing death by dangerous driving.

He was jailed for four years and was banned from driving for 33 months and ordered to take an extended re-test.

The inquest also heard how the fatal impact was witnessed by Mr Robinson’s daughter Jessica and son-in-law Brent.

The pair said: “We had just left the Municipal Hall and Jessica went to cross the road first followed by Brent who waited for a black car to pass.

“He then crossed the road and was aware of a car travelling behind him.

“It was then that Brent heard the collision between Keith and the car.

“There had been no change in direction or sign of brakes or flashing lights.”

East Lancashire coroner Richard Taylor, concluding, said: “Mr Robinson died from sustained when struck by a car being driven at excess speed.

“My conclusion is Mr Robinson died as a result of a road traffic collision.

“I would like to pass on my sincere condolences to the family for your loss.”
