A MASTERPLAN detailing the future of a historic mill is to be unveiled.

The proposals will see Brierfield Mill become a vibrant new working, living and cultural quarter, according to Pendle Council leader Joe Cooney.

The council bought the Victorian landmark, once earmarked for a 5,000-place Islamic girls’ boarding school, for £1.5million last year after receiving a 100 per cent grant from the government’s Homes and Communities Agency.

The former Smith and Nephew site is now owned by PEARL, a joint venture company combining the council and Barnfield Investment Properties.

Tim Webber, managing director of Barnfield, said: “David Morley Architects have proved themselves to be worthy winners of our design competition for Brierfield Mill.

“Their masterplan has been designed in a way which is sensitive to the mill’s history, but includes striking contemporary features, which will make this a thriving new destination for the whole region.”

The process for transforming the mill is expected to take years and PEARL will have to attract businesses and public funds, as well as private sector investments, to make the project a success.

Plans for the Glen Way site will be displayed at the mill next Saturday from 11am to 3pm. Architects will be on hand to discuss their visions and a new name for the development will be revealed.

There will also be displays of past and present photographs of Brierfield Mill and the chance to chat and share ideas about the mill’s future.

Coun Cooney said the display was an important first step in attracting businesses, entrepreneurs and funding organisations to transform the mill.

He said: “I think it’s stunning and it helps us visualise how Brierfield Mill could be developed over the coming years.

“When people look at the plans I think they will see how Brierfield Mill has huge potential to become a vibrant new working, living and cultural quarter of regional significance.”

The masterplan and new development name for the mill will also be on display on the council’s website www.pendle. gov.uk from Saturday.
