A HIGH school has improved from ‘satisfactory’ to ‘good’.

West Craven High School headteacher Arnold Kuchartschuk said he was delighted with the report, which comes just a short while before he is set to retire.

Mr Kuchartschuk said: “It is a wonderful accolade on which to leave. It is a good report so as a whole school team, we are thrilled.”

Lead inspector Alan Parkinson said in a report that some of the teaching at the Barnoldswick school was ‘outstanding’.

He said: “Given their starting points, almost all students make good progress throughout the college, in a range of subjects, including English and mathematics.

“Students are well cared for and say that they feel safe in the college.

“The behaviour of students and their attitudes to learning are good.

“Students are polite and well mannered.”

The Kelbrook Road school is not yet outstanding because a few lessons required improvement and college leaders and the governing body did not always check well enough the impact of their actions to ensure students learn well, particularly for those who join the college with lower literacy skills.
