THE £32million redevelopment of a former disused mill as a leisure destination has taken another important step forward.

A planning application has been submitted for a canalside pedestrian plaza at the Northlight complex at Brierfield Mill.

If approved, it would mean a new modern look for the area, also featuring canal moorings and a planted embankment. Earlier plans for a marina were amended after consultation with the Canal & River Trust.

The plan is part of the overall transformation of the former Smith and Nephew mill, which has deteriorated since 2007 when it became vacant.

The project, an effort between Pendle Council and Brierfield-based Barnfield Construction, was officially launched last October.

Documents submitted with the application by Pendle Enterprise and Regeneration Brierfield Mill Ltd make clear that this application focuses on developing a leisure destination.

The main aims are to 'create a vibrant landscape setting for the uses and functions of the canalside plaza and canal moorings' and to 'create a sense of place'.

The application says: "The vision for the site is to continue the wider approach and create a welcoming, respectful environment with a design that responds positively to the local landscape context, character and heritage."

It adds: "The external lighting will be controlled via solar dial time clocks and photocell arrangement to ensure that the lights are activated only when required."

A spokesman for Pendle Enterprise and Regeneration Ltd said other plans for Northlight included a hotel, converted apartments, a micro-brewery, bar/restaurant and managed offices and a craft market.

Earlier this month it was reported that an ultra-modern arts centre featuring an open-air cinema is on the way at Northlight.

It will be developed after a successful bid for £348,000 to Arts Council England by In-Situ, a non-for-profit arts organisation based in Pendle.
