HARDY runners are being given the chance to shine in a new evening race and mark the memory of a popular Burnley man.

John Hartley had just finished with the former Crabtree Engineering at Heasandford, now known as Hycrome, when he discovered he had terminal cancer.

The 65-year-old's last remaining wish was to climb Pendle Hill for a final time and when he became too ill to make the ascent his work colleagues built a special carriage so he could reach the summit.

He died in September, just three months after being diagnosed.

Now friends from the Pendle and Burnley Grand Prix (PBGP) will honour his passing in September with the first ever 'Towneley Torchlight 5K' in the park on January 20.

John Roche, PBGP chairman and a former workmate, said: "John was due to set off on a cruise with his wife but sadly on a visit to the GP he was diagnosed with terminal cancer with very limited time.

"This obviously had a devastating effect on his family but it was also felt among all his work colleagues and friends.

"John's family are so grateful to all the staff at the hospice for making his final days as comfortable as possible."

Not only was Mr Hartley a keen cricketer but he was also an experienced fell walker.

He was greeted following his final Pendle climb by his friends and family.

Sammi Bracewell, a fundraiser for the Reedley hospice said: "We are extremely excited to launch Towneley Torchlight 5K with John.

"The event encourages community spirit and promotes healthy living and exercise, whilst raising funds for the hospice at the same time.

"Anybody in the local community can take part and get involved, whether they are amateur or professional runners."

Hospice organisers have paid tribute to Mr Hartley's family and friends, and Clayton-le-Moors Harriers, for the support they have already shown before the event.

Those taking part must be aged 11 or over and are asked to either wear head torches or bright clothing for a 6.30pm start.

Participants can register by calling the fundraising team on 01282 440120 or going online to www.pendleside.org.uk.
