FIREFIGHTERS were called to Calder Mill in Colne after a pile of wood was reported to be in flames in the builders’ yard.
One fire engine from Nelson Fire Station arrived at the scene at 8.20pm and crews battled the flames for around one hour.
Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles around but fire officials have said that it was contained and did not spread or cause any damage to vehicles or properties.
A spokesman from Nelson fire station said: “It was a pile of wood from the derelict mill that was on fire. As yet, we are to determine the cause of the fire as it was not immediately clear what caused it or if it was deliberate.
“Luckily the fire did not spread anywhere else so there was no damage to persons or property.”
