A TREE is set to be planted in Gisburn to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War.
The commemorative tree will be ceremonially planted by Ribble Valley Borough Council mayor Michael Ranson in the children’s playground off Main Street tomorrow at 10.30am.
The mayor will also plant a tree in Rimington at 11am and in Downham at 11.30am.
Trees have already been planted in Longridge, Hurst Green and Paythorne.
The Great Wood scheme will see oak trees bearing plaques in memory of the hundreds of young Ribble Valley men who lost their lives during the Great War planted throughout the borough.
As Ribble Valley borough did not exist until 1974, there is no precise records of the number of fallen in the borough, but it is believed to be around 1,000.
