BLACKBURN Cathedral has hosted a debate on ‘Is Britain Really a Christian Country?’ The discussion followed David Cameron’s statement that ‘Britain should be more confident about our status as a Christian country’.

It prompted 50 writers, scientists, broadcasters and academics to sign an open letter concerned at the 'negative consequences' of his assertion.

Blackburn MP Jack Straw supported Mr Cameron and said he did not accept the analysis that his views fostered 'alienation and division’.

Cathedral dialogue development officer Anjum Anwar hosted the 90-minute ‘public conversation’.

Those taking part included Canon Chancellor Ian Stockton, Rev Kevin Logan, former Blackburn with Darwen councillor Chris Thayne, Canon Shannon Ledbetter, and Lancashire Council of Mosques director Ismail Patel.
