THE police and crime commissioner is backing a teenage girl’s campaign to make lessons on female genital mutilation compulsory for school children.

Fahma Mohamed, 17, wants all schools to speak to pupils and parents about FGM before the summer holidays, which is when many young girls are traditionally cut, either at home or abroad.

She was set to hand over a petition to education secretary Michael Gove with signatures from more than 200,000 people, including commissioner Clive Grunshaw.

Mr Grunshaw said: “Quite simply, female genital mutilation is child abuse and an abhorrent crime.

“It is one which will not be tolerated in Lancashire, or anywhere else in the UK.

"The idea people believe it is acceptable to inflict such levels of violence on schoolgirls in the name of culture is unthinkable.

“Prevention is always better than cure, and I hope that by speaking about FGM and raising awareness of the full horror of it, we can stop more young girls across the UK falling victim.”
