WORK to drain Highams Playing Fields and create an adjoining community orchard and picnic spot has been delayed by bad weather.
In June last year, £5,000 in grants paved the way for the work to make the grassland usable all-year-round and improve disabled access.
Recent heavy rain has resulted in the work at the Accrington fields being delayed and the original May completion date for the drainage work has been put back to June. Milnshaw ward councillor Clare Pritchard said: “There have been rumours that because the work has stopped, the money has run out and that it will never be completed.
“That is not true.
“The recent heavy rain on the clay soil means it can’t proceed until the weather brightens up.”
