At last. I was beginning to worry that the old spleen- venting Tories of the past were gone, then along comes Jack Herer (LT, May 7).

Why, when things don’t go right for the above mentioned, do they go back to the old excuse of blaming the unions and Labour?

If I can quote a few things that the present government promised (no spin added): ‘The NHS is safe in my (ok, our) hands.’ ‘We will not put up tuition fees.’ ‘We will not touch pensions.’ ‘We will not touch the front-line police force.’ ‘No cutbacks in care for the elderly.’ We have also been told ‘we are all in this together’.

Yes Jack, we are, but it’s a great shame that some of us can’t see it for what it is – those who can afford it are all in it for less. Those who can’t afford it require support and a voice – the unions.

I am a pensioner. I hope you don’t represent me in the big house.
