I take exception to the letter ‘With no pride, there’s no effort’ (LT, March 30) to the description of Olive Lane, Darwen.

The writer describes the ‘broken glass’ theory – if you have some anti-social behaviour in your area you would be better of packing up and leaving the people who have caused this to their own devices and move to some were where this does not happen.

It mentions graffiti and boarded-up properities and, yes, we have some – name me an area that does not.

But I have many good people in this area and many organisations working hard to improve this area: bowlers of Olive Lane during the summer teach five local schools to play bowls, and reach out of St James estate working with young people (with great success).

Aldridge Academy has seeded planters on Industry street and again cleaned up Olive Lane play area.

What I need in this area is support from the council.

We have some landlord licensing but not enough.

The success in this area is now being rolled out to other areas in the borough, but there’s no point rolling it out until you have got it right in one area first.

Shadsworth in Blackburn has just been awarded a large sum of money because it is deprived. This ward is as deprived as Sudell which has been awarded £5,850, (spot the difference).

More resources are needed in my ward such as clean-ups and dog wardens and police to enforce laws.

We have over 200 empty properties and more help with absent landlords are needed to help the good people.

Coun Roy Davies, Darwen
