They have been getting people up and about post-op within the first 24 hours since the 1990s (Health, LT, March 8).

I’ve personally got folk up and walking after hip replacements within the first 48 hours – usually amidst protest because they don’t believe it can be done, which it can. I’d like to see the ‘returns’ rates of the people who don’t fare so well because GPs are not always best placed to deal with post-op patients on top of their ‘walk-in’ caseload.

Plus, how many patients get sent home with care packages in place, but only in theory because the communications somehow break down between hospital and community?

I speak from experience.
