Last week I visited Blackburn cemetery along with my daughter who is doing a project on people who have made a difference to Blackburn in the past. We found the graves of the tallest man in Britain, Mrs Lewis who founded the Teetotal mission, (my mother often spoke about her), the Dixon family who founded the Blackburn orphanage and the Ragged School – I was threatened I would be sent there if I misbehaved. Then there was John Lewis the founder of Blackburn Rovers, also James Pitts who was awarded the VC in The Boer War.

I'm sure you must feel very proud to have such wonderful people lain to rest there. Then I came across a lone dog walker who was trying to retrieve his dog from a HUGE skip. It was partially filled with bags of rubbish and the floor was covered in black gunge almost like tar. In front of the skip was rubbish and cans, fallen out of the bags. I assumed that the bags were filled with the rubbish from the cemetery bins, but I was told they were from the road sweepers carts. Surely a place for such a large skip should be beside the bin lorries and not in a beautiful peaceful place like the cemetery.

Disgusted Old Blackburnian from Chester (Name and address received).
