REGARDING the article (LET, February 25) about the increase in heavy goods vehicles finding alternate routes to Blackburn, Darwen and the M65 since the ban on lorries over 7.5 tonnes using the Grane Road came into force.

As a Guide resident I can confirm that traffic problems, which were already in existence, have greatly increased.

It is almost impossible to cross School Lane and Haslingden Road adjacent to the M65 turn-off with any degree of safety, particularly between 7.30am and 9.30am and between 3.30pm and 6pm.

Vehicles are either driving well over the speed limit of 30mph or backed up from the roundabout, making it difficult for pedestrians to see to cross.

I have every sympathy with Grane Road residents but I am sure that there are far more houses and residents in the Guide area who are now affected by the ban on the Grane Road, which was re-classified as an A road when the M65 was extended.

School Lane at Guide is still a B road and should not be used for heavy traffic.

I cannot understand why planners did not ensure the M66 led straight on to the M65 in Haslingden in the first place, with signs directing heavy traffic away from minor roads.

We have been campaigning for suitable traffic calming measures on School Lane and across Haslingden Road by the bus stop and the road leading up to the motorway.

Apparently money is not available but it will be too late when someone here gets killed!

AUDREY FOY (Mrs), Haslingden Road, Guide, Blackburn.
