SIX hundred Muslims gather in the town centre to protest against a perceived insult and Councillor Hussain Akhtar claims that "We have been together in this community for 40 years and these cartoons have threatened to undo all the good relations."

The threat is not from the cartoons, which hardly anyone has seen. It is from the hysterical, orchestrated reaction of the worldwide Muslim community.

I find it deeply insulting to see Islamic fanatics beheading hostages on TV, deeply insulting to have fellow citizens blown up by home-grown suicide bombers and to have men and women walking our streets with their faces masked.

But I do not take to the streets carrying a placard stating "Islam is the problem, freedom is the cure."

I just write to my local newspaper.
