CONGRATULATIONS on Michael Short's contribution in the LET on February 1. He stole my thunder as I was on the point of commenting about the antics of Lancashire County Council.

There is no doubt the work the council does must be tedious, if not onerous, as it is responsible for so many facets of such a wide area.

However, in a number of cases it does not appear to have the capabilities to handle situations.

Not only this, but in a number of cases individual self importance seems to cloud democratic mental processes.

Consider the columnist's examples: 1. The almost catastrophic closure of care homes, chiefly motivated by the chairman of the adult and community services committee.

2. Libraries included in the same portfolio were chosen for closure because they were within two miles of another.

3. The suggestion that elderly people should be given a week's supply of frozen food. The idea is mind boggling in its stupidity, 4. School uniform is a great leveller and some form of grant should be available.
