THE Short and Sharp column on February 1 contained a number of misleading statements about Lancashire County Council's annual budget.

Not least your columnist referred to "turf(ing) elderly folk out of our care homes." It was nothing like that in reality.

A number of homes were closed and a number were renovated.

Absolutely no one was "turfed out" although building works meant a small number were moved temporarily. No one was sent home from a care home.

People needing such accommodation were given greater choice in deciding which homes they wanted to go to.

Private homes and public homes are included in that choice.

More importantly, however, was support given to people so they never had to enter a home.

Many people entered a home in years gone by because they felt they had no option. Many dreaded it.

Much support, including domiciliary care the former home helps is now available so they need not face that option.

The county council assists more than 22,000 people per year to stay in their own home.

Help includes home care, day care, meals, short term respite care, direct payments and other professional support.

We believe we are, as your columnist puts it, "really, really" looking after people.

We may never agree on this. No matter.
