I read most of the article on the visit of Rachida Dati (LT, February 20) in a spirit of almost total disbelief.

The minister talked with Muslim leaders and a veil wearer, people who would give a very one-sided view on the acceptability of the veil in our society.

She also talked with a certain government minister who will be very careful what he says while there are still votes to be won.

Ms Dati then left for France thinking she had visited a country where people could stand for office wearing the veil.

I sincerely hope she is wrong and I firmly believe that, if there is to be any hope for future British society, we need to take a stand and oppose the constant challenges to our way of life.

Our first mistake was to exempt Sikhs from wearing crash helmets.

We then relaxed our rules on humane slaughter of animals and now we have masked women walking in and out of banks and shops.

The ‘community leaders’ said they felt British first and then Muslim, so I say let them demonstrate this by encouraging Muslim women to remove the veil and embrace the society they have chosen to live in.

They could start with the lady who apparently teaches French in a state school while wearing a veil. Brian Gordon Conservative Councillor, Meadowhead Ward.
