Having spent many years as a county councillor working to improve services for older people, I am appalled by some of the manifesto promises (threats?) that came out of the Tory Party Conference in Manchester.

In particular, I am very concerned that people may find themselves buying possible future care with a one-off payment at the age of 65.

This is a divisive con-trick aimed at buying votes in middle England from those who fear they’ll lose their inheritance.

How many of us in East Lancashire could afford to spend £8,000 or more of our hard-earned cash on the off-chance that we may need residential care at some time in the future?

The fact is that the vast majority of people live out their lives without ever needing residential care. And while people are living longer, they are also staying fitter for longer.

Contrast this crazy, unproven scheme with Labour’s promise of free care for people where they want it – in their own homes. Let’s keep our cash and our independence – it’s too valuable to lose.
