THE subject of organ donation can be a really sensitive issue.

No-one really wants to have to think about being in a situation where they or their loved ones has to make a firm decision over whether an organ should be donated to help someone else.

It conjures up incredibly sad images when someone’s life cannot be saved despite the amazing leaps forward in medical science over the past few decades.

But it is an area we should all think about - and make our next of kin aware of our feelings - no matter whether we are for or against it.

Next month a major new campaign is being launched in Blackburn with Darwen to raise awareness in the black and ethnic minority community who traditionally have not signed up to donor programmes.

Campaigns like this are great because they get people talking about difficult issues.

And it is being fully supported by former borough mayor Salim Mulla, whose wife Sayeeda had to wait six years for a match for a kidney transplant, The couple know just how life changing a transplant can be.

And after all, you never know whether you might find yourself in a situation when a donor match could make all the difference.
