There are lots of people who are in work but still claim benefits – working family tax credit, child benefit. Just because you claim benefits doesn’t mean you’re scum.
The majority of people have genuine reasons for claiming benefit but newspapers such as the Daily Mail or Tory MPs spout the usual drivel about skivers and scroungers just to get votes.
As for MPs’ salaries, it isn’t appropriate to set their own salary levels and whilst some public sector workers do earn high salaries: the two can’t be compared.
MPs can claim expenses for second homes, furnishings and employ their own family as staff, plus in the long run they have massive earning potential with books, public appearances, TV programmes: look at Michael Portillo jollying around the country on trains for the BBC.
