WORK on a new cemetery site in Rishton is set to be completed by the end of year.

The Great Harwood and Rishton Cemetery off Lee Lane is due to be finished in ‘October or November’ according to council bosses.

Plans were submitted in 2015 for the expansion of the current Great Harwood cemetery, based around 200 yards down the road in Lee Lane which is approaching full capacity.

Cllr Ken Moss, cabinet member for cemeteries and Rishton ward representative, said landscaping and dry stone walling work is just being finalised at the new site.

He said: “It’s all positive news, we’re hoping to have the first burials in late October or November this year.

“The Great Harwood cemetery is very close to full capacity, it only has about 20 spot left.

“Once the new site is completed it should secure the future of the cemetery for the next 70 or 80 years.

“This is a much-needed new facility and represents the first ever cemetery in Rishton.”
