WORKERS repairing the Leeds to Liverpool canal in Rishton have released a video detailing their work.

The Canal and River Trust uploaded a 92 second clip to video sharing website YouTube.

Engineer John Akroyd was filmed discussing the project in front of the empty section of canal.

He said: “We’ve had extensive leakage from the bed of the canal, which has erroded the embankment filaway and caused these huge sink holes, in the bed and in the tow path.

“Some of the sink holes are the size of a saloon car. They are really big and we have to take really prompt action, and get two temporary dams in place.

“Now we are onto a repair phase, we are ramping in and putting an excavator in the bed of the canal where we will clean out all the holes, compact all the fill material back down and give a new clay fill.

“We are then going to waterproof the canal. We will reinstate the canal wash wall and we will reinstate the tow path.

“There’s also a culvert that runs beneath the embankment. We are going to reline that internally, that will strengthen it and extend its life for around 100 years.”

The canal has been closed for more than two months, and repairs are estimated to cost £300,000. It is not expected to reopen before the end of November .
