A CLEAN-UP group has been set up to help crackdown on a ‘hazardous and disgusting’ fly-tipping hot spot.

Residents said there have been problems with rubbish being dumped in Nook Lane in Oswaldtwistle for years.

Andrea Doyle, who lives in New Lane, has now decided to take matters into her own hands and has set up the ‘Oswaldtwistle Community Clean-up’ group.

This week they completed the first clean-up at the site, collecting 10 bags of rubbish, three tyres, a double mattress and many bags of dogs waste.

Mrs Doyle said:”It’s shameful, we’ve got a big problem with fly-tipping. It’s a beautiful area over there, a lot of people walk there dogs.

“It’s an absolute mess and it’s a real hazard. It’s disgusting. It’s been going on for quite a long time. I’ve lived here for 26 years and for most of that time it has been a problem.

“There seems to be quite a lot of interest and folk want to clean up other areas.

“It’s great to see so many people in the community getting together and helping to tidy up and improve our area.”

Before the clean-up, she appealed on Facebook for volunteers to help her with the clean and around 10 volunteers helped out.

All the rubbish collected from the clean-up has now been disposed of with help from the council.

The Lancashire Telegraph reported in January that piles of rubbish had been dumped in Nook Lane including household rubbish, gas canisters and a front door, which local councillors branded ‘disgusting and dangerous’.

The group say they will carry out more clean-ups in the future and will look at different areas if they hear reports of similar problems elsewhere.

The next one is set to take place later this month and details will be revealed soon.
