RESIDENTS have called for speed bumps on a busy access road in Hyndburn.

Cllr Glenn Harrison has called on Lancashire County Council to introduce speed humps at the access point between Hargreaves Road and Stanhill Lane in Oswaldwistle.

The estate lies on a hilltop and is part of a busy road where children play and dogs frequently roam.

Cllr Harrison, who represents Oswaldtwistle on Hyndburn Council, said: “I have received a number of complaints from residents on Stanhill Lane about highway safety.

Traffic in the area comes in and out of the estate where kids are playing.

“There have been two accidents in the last two weeks and numerous in the last few months from the same estate entrance and nothing has been done about it.

“County Hall said introducing speed humps would interfere with the deployment of emergency services in that area.

“Surely one speed bump wouldn’t make that much of a difference.”

Resident Brian Jones, 66, who has lived in nearby Newbury Close for 33 years, said: “I would like somebody to come down here and show them the dangers on this road.

“There was an incident last week. I heard a bang when I was in the garden and then a neighbour came out and said the car caved the fence in.

“Last summer a van went through the same fence and left it in worse condition that last Saturday’s did.

“The vehicle lost control and even managed to knock down an apple tree.

“There are 20mph signs but people seem to just ignore it.

“If County Hall want to come and speak to me about it then I’m happy to show them the dangers first hand.

“I think they would have second thoughts about not introducing speed humps in this area.

“We are not talking about two or three speed humps to be brought in. We are just talking about one.

“Let’s have a bit of common sense and get something done.”

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “We’ve recently carried out speed surveys on Stanhill Road and Stanhill Lane and discussed the results with the police. Stanhill Road has been put forward for future mobile enforcement, and interactive display signs have been deployed on Stanhill Lane to alert drivers to the speed limit.

“Close to the junction of Hargreaves Road with Stanhill Street, which joins Stanhill Lane, the speed limit changes to 20mph. We have recently installed a temporary sign to alert drivers to community concerns about speeding, but cannot display this for more than 3 months due to highway regulations.

“We can’t justify a traffic calming scheme as this location has a good safety record, however we are considering other measures to encourage lower speeds in response to the concerns raised.”
