PLANS to change the name of Hyndburn Borough Council could be abandoned at a meeting tonight.

Council leader Peter Britcliffe had put forward the suggestion that the council should change its name to Accrington and Districts Council because Hyndburn is not well recognised.

The Conservative leader said he wanted to reclaim the borough's identity by making it obvious where the council was geographically located.

But the plans might be put on the 'backburner' following opposition from residents, particularly in Great Harwood.

A meeting is being held in Accrington tonight to make a decision on how to proceed.
