A WOMAN has been taken to hospital with a serious head injury after being hit by a car.

Police said the incident happened at around 1am today when the 53-year-old woman was crossing Queen Street in Great Harwood near to the Walmsley pub.

Police said the woman, who has not been named, was hit by a Vauxhall Corsa which was travelling towards Clayton-le-Moors.

The woman, who is from Great Harwood, was taken to Royal Preston Hospital suffering from a head injury. Police said her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The driver of the car, who stopped at the scene, was not seriously injured.

No arrests have been made.

Police have issued a witness appeal and asked for anyone with information to come forward.

Sgt Oliver Jones said: “This collision has left a woman with serious injuries and I would appeal to anyone who saw the collision itself or the Vauxhall Corsa in the moments beforehand to get in touch.”

The road was closed to allow the woman to be treated and for investigation work to be carried out. It has since re-opened.
