STAFF at a community library are urging residents to use the facility after rallying to reopen a library.

Membership of the Mercer House library in Clayton-le-Moors, which houses over 1000 books and computer facilities, is growing fast.

Cash-strapped council bosses closed the town’s former civic hall library last year but volunteers stepped forward in May to set up the new community ran centre.

Staff and volunteers have already welcomed more than one hundred members to the library and are keen to welcome more along to the facility at the Arthur Wilson Centre on Pickup St.

Nick Collingridge, director of Mercer House, said: “It’s great to see membership growing and we’d love to see more local people coming along, everyone is more than welcome.

"The community library is run by local volunteers for local people and we’re keen for as many people as possible to access this wonderful community resource.”

Currently a team of 14 volunteers take shifts to run the centre.

The library is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm.

It could start to open on Saturday mornings depending on demand.
