A FOUR-YEAR-OLD boy battling cancer is set to undergo an operation to remove 90 per cent of his liver to boost his chances of survival.

The family of Charlie Procter, from Church, were previously set a £315,000 target to get him to America for surgery.

They have now been given a boost by the news he can have an operation on his liver in Birmingham within three weeks, which was not previously thought available.

He will still need to go to Cincinnati for a lung operation because of how the cancer has spread but they are hoping the total money needed will now decrease.

Mum Amber Schofield, 22, said: “Before, nobody in this country wanted to take him for the operation and they only wanted to give him a liver transplant.

“But now we’ve found someone in Birmingham who will remove 90 per cent of his liver which is covered in tumours.

“A huge thanks to Dr Geller in Cincinnati for not only showing the UK he does not need a transplant but also for helping us by non-stop searching for someone to help Charlie.

“It will be 100 times better for Charlie, it should give him a better change of survival.

“The liver can keep on growing until he’s 21, we’re hoping that long term it will be a big boost for him.”

Charlie’s family now hope the total needed to get him to America will come down to between £200,000 and £250,000 at least.

The youngster had previously undergone more than 20 rounds of chemotherapy since he was diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma liver cancer more than a year ago.

He has now stopped receiving the treatment in preparation for the surgery.

Charlie’s fundraising has recently received a boost after he had the chance to lead out Accrington Stanley at the Wham Stadium and Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.
