IN TORFAEN, people living with multiple sclerosis (MS) are quite literally fighting back by taking self-defence classes to improve their strength.

Vicky Villatts, 62, from Cwmbran, has been coming to the MS Society self defence class for 18 months. She said: "I've found the self defence classes a great way to improve my strength, confidence and take out frustration."

Ms Villatts was diagnosed two years ago, but has been living with the condition for 10 years. It has gradually taken her mobility and she now uses a frame.

She added: "The self defence class allows me to fight back against my MS and keep active.

"My arms would have definitely stiffened up and mobility worsened if it wasn't for this exercise."

The director of MS Society Cymru, Judi Rhys, said: "Because it's poorly understood, living with MS can turn a simple shopping trip or social event into an ordeal.

"Yet people with MS have the same aspirations as anyone else. Most want loving relationships, an active social life and a successful career - and they can have this, given the right support and understanding."

The MS Society has launched an appeal this MS Week, April 30- May 6, in a bid to raise £500,000 to fund better treatments and support for people with MS, to help them fight back against the condition. People are urged to join the Fightback by donating at msfightback.org.uk.
