A GOLF club was broken into by burglars who left a trail of damage.
Police said officers were called to Accrington Golf Club at 4.35am after two men broke into the club in Devon Avenue, Oswaldtwistle.
A police spokesman said the vandals tried to break in through a large window by throwing large stone plant pots but could not get in.
They then removed the pane of glass and entered.
The offenders tried to remove a safe but could not get it out, police said.
The men were in a white van which was caught on CCTV.
Jonathan Pollard, the club’s professional, said: “It is worrying for the club someone has tried to break in to steal something.
“It looks like they were going for the safe, but it’s bolted down to the floor and it's really big and heavy so they couldn’t move it.
“We’ve heard about a few clubs and shops being targeted recently, it is not good to hear.
“As a club we hope the police can continue with their investigation and catch the people responsible, bringing them the appropriate punishment.”
The police spokesman said: “The men found the safe in an office and they tried to get it out.
“They left it behind and it was found in a state of disrepair.
“The two men have not thought to have got away with anything, however they have caused a lot of damage to the place.
“Inquiries are ongoing to track the men down as CCTV footage has shown there was a white van and two unknown offenders.
“Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 101.”
