A FURNITURE store has suddenly shut after serving people in East Lancashire for two decades.

Customers have been left in the dark at the sudden closure of RDA Trading, a home furniture and discount store.

The company had two stores in East Lancashire - in Plumbe Street, Burnley and Abbey Street, Accrington.

The company, which has been running for 20 years, first announced the closure on its website last weekend and both stores have signs on the entrance informing people of the closure.

In a brief announcement on their website, the company said: “Thanks to all our fantastic customers over the last 20 years. We are now closed. Any customers waiting for orders will be contacted shortly.”

In addition, since the news first broke on Saturday, the website has been disabled and the firm cannot be contacted over the phone or on social media.

Councillors, who haven’t heard the reasons behind the closure, said they were ‘shocked’ and ‘disappointed’ by the sudden announcement.

Burnley ward councillor Gary Frayling, who regularly visited the store before it shut, said the business’s closure was ‘another blow for Burnley’.

He said: “I just came out of the Burnley Miners Social Cub and went to turn into the street where RDA is and noticed the gates were closed.

“It was the first time I had heard or seen anything about it being closed.

“It was a good store and cheap and I bought a lot of items there.

“It’s a bit of a shock to me because of the potential job losses. It’s another blow for Burnley.”

Council leader Cllr Mark Townsend, who was equally surprised, said: “Like any store closing it’s always disappointing.

“Hopefully no customers have been let down or the staff involved who have been affected by the store’s closure.”

Accrington councillor Tony Dobson, who is represents the area and is a member of the Accrington town team, added: “It’s very disappointing another store has ceased trading.”

“As a community we need to come together and try and spend as much locally as possible to give these companies every chance of succeeding.”
