MAJOR roadworks on the Whitebirk roundabout next to M65 junction six and the link road to the Red Lion roundabout are due to finish by the weekend.

But there will be further disruption to for commuters heading off the motorway into Blackburn later this summer.

Work on electricity cables and drainage alongside the tree-lined traffic island between the two roundabouts to supply the £100million Frontier Park business and industrial estate is scheduled to be completed by the end of tomorrow.

At the end of the month the diggers will return to lay the ducting necessary for the cabling for a new traffic signal gantry on the Whitebirk roundabout to ease traffic using the main access road to the development by Euro-Garages when it opens later in the summer.

In the first week in July there will be an overnight closure of the link road to put the gantry in place.

This work will take place between the end of the evening rush hour and start of morning traffic peak.

Alex Kenwright, development manager for the project, said: "We are doping everything we can to minimise disruptions to motorists. Euro-Garages is paying the full cost of the works in excess of £500,000."

The full development, due for completion by 2022, will have five industrial/ warehouse units of between 94,500sq ft and 378,000sq ft and aims to create 2,000 jobs.

There will also be new petrol and service station with shop, a drive-through restaurant and a coffee shop, a 150-bedroom hotel and a conference and banqueting centre complex.
