PLANS to complement the £750,000 restoration of Accrington Town Hall's ballroom have been revealed.

Hyndburn Council created a touch of 'Downton' at the historic venue earlier this year, and now wants to improve the Grade II listed building further.

The outside balcony will be upgraded so it can be used during functions and events, including for wedding photoshoots and official announcements.

Existing corridors and mezzanine level will be upgraded, while toilets at the building with be refitted, documents have revealed.

"With minimal intervention on original building fabric, the alterations and refurbishment will ensure the ballroom is provided with what is required for its continued success as a commercial and community asset within the borough," said a statement of significance lodged by Campbell Driver Partnership, which is working with the council on the project.

"The focus of this application is limited to the rear annexe, particularly the existing ground floor toilets and linking rear corridor, first floor mezzanine above the supper room and existing second floor toilets and corridors.

"The supper room, judging by its appearance, finish and particularly the form and construction of the mezzanine, is likely to have formed part of the 1968 refurbishment works or sometime shortly afterwards."

A leading feature of the ballroom is the grand staircase that lends itself to red carpet entrances and a natural photography backdrop.

The ballroom dates back to 1858, and the restoration was intended to enhance original features while also bringing the facilities up-to-date.

The ballroom features a fully sprung dance floor - the only other of its kind in the north west is at the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool. It has two new bars - one located behind the stage area and a mezzanine cocktail bar overlooking the main space.

Kerry Smith, cultural services Manager at Hyndburn Leisure, said: “The ballroom is the jewel in Accrington’s crown.

"2015 is set to be an incredible year for the ballroom.

"From the moment brides, grooms, prom kings and queens step onto our majestic staircase they’ll feel like they’re in their very own Downton Abbey.”

Other events lined up for the ballroom include dance nights, film clubs, princess parties and live shows.
