ARMED Forces Day celebrations begin in Hyndburn today when a dedicated flag will be raised in Accrington.

The ceremony will take place at 10.15am outside the town hall after the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire, Lord Charles Shuttleworth presents the Armed Forces Day flag to the Mayor, Cllr Marlene Haworth.

The Armed Forces Fun Day in Gatty Park, which will be held on Saturday, June 27, will feature a packed programme of events starting at 12.30pm with an opening ceremony.

It will then run from 1pm to 4pm, with host of events on offer including a Poppy Picnic, stalls, children’s games, arts and crafts, music, singing, bowling and a sports competition.

Cllr Haworth said: “Armed Forces Week is Hyndburn’s chance to show our support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, from currently serving troops to Service families, and from veterans to cadets, so please come along to the events and show your support for our Armed Forces, everyone is more than welcome.

"Thank you to all the organisations who have worked together to organise the fun day and to those who are taking part.

"Also many thanks to Cath Holmes and Nick Collingridge who, on behalf of the Accrington Pals Centenary Commemorative Fund, made a significant contribution towards the cost of the opening ceremony at the fun day.”
