Yesterday scientists at CERN re-started scientific investigations after a two-year pause and are now waiting for the first new data to begin flowing from the underground particle smasher, paving the way to a new era in physics.

The Malt Street company has provided circuit boards and cables for the 27km-long underground ring beneath the French-Swiss border.

Alicja Kay, from Hapton, who owns the company, said her team had created circuit boards for both the original and updated technology, which is expected to gather more information than ever.

She said: “The scientists are in the process of testing things. We are going to build the new generation of boards for them but nothing has been finalised yet at this stage. It will be about August when they are ready to have the boards commissioned.

“The new data being collected is exciting. The information they collect will enable them to see what changes need to be made to the prototype equipment. We have already been adding and altering things. They are redesigning and adding new features because they want more information collected ”
