A MURDER inquiry has been launched - even though police have not found a body.

Officers were called to a home in Stockbridge Road, Padiham, and found evidence of a ‘sustained and prolonged attack’ which they suspect would have proved fatal.

The ‘heavily-blooded scene’ was discovered at 12.20am on Sunday. Detectives are today trying to trace 26-year-old Alan Lee Street, who they believe could be the victim.

Two men, aged 19 and 20, from Oswaldtwistle and Padiham, have now been arrested on suspicion of murder.

A cordon has been put in place and specialist forensic biologists are investigating the scene.

Detective Superintendent Neil Hunter, who is leading the investigation, said: “This investigation is still in its early stages but as a result of early inquiries, despite the fact that we are currently unable to identify the victim, we believe that a vicious, prolonged and sustained attack has taken place.

“Whilst I cannot confirm the victim is definitely Alan Lee Street, I have grave concerns for his safety and welfare and one of my main priorities at this stage is to trace him.

“I would appeal to anybody who has heard from Alan or knows of his whereabouts or has been in his company since Friday to contact police.”

Mr Street is believed to have connections to Oswaldtwistle.
