ACCRINGTON Victoria Hospital's GP centre will close in the summer.

The walk-in centre will remain open until June 16 to be replaced by a new system of extended GP access in the area.

As part of a phased closure, from Sunday, April 8, East Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group bosses said the service will be changing.

People may be redirected to an alternative service on Sundays from this date.

The Lancashire Telegraph has taken to the streets to get your views on the upcoming closure of the facility.

George South, 74, of Garbett Street, Accrington, who uses the walk-in centre said: “It’s half an hour from my house and closing it would mean me going to Blackburn and Burnley.

“This would be a real inconvenience for me.”

Judith, 61, and David Shaw, 66 from Accrington, said: “People use it because they can’t get to the doctor’s.

“The closure is of great concern to everyone.

“They need to make it a lot clearer what’s going to happen.”

Joyce Livesey, 68, of Jubliee Road, Church, said: “It would be a real shame if it closed.

“Every town should have a walk-in centre and it closing will mean more pressure on GPs and A&E.

“You just can’t guarantee getting a GP appointment.”

Allan Lang, of Ramsbottom Street, Accrington, said: “I use the walk-in centre regularly as you can’t get the services.

“I’ve got a really good doctor but when you make an appointment, it can take up to a week to be seen, so this won’t help.”

Jessica McMillan, 23, from Clayton-le-Moors, said: “You ring up the doctor’s at 8 and they don’t cater appointments for working people.

“You can’t get late night appointments either as the GP is closed, so this walk-in centre is a real lifeline.”

Kimberley Whitehead, campaign organiser of the protest group SAVE Accrington Walk-in centre', said: "This will have a knock-on effect on A&E and pharmacies.

"The CCG has disregarded thousands who've signed a petition against the closure."
