THE mother of a seriously ill six-year-old girl has called for a changes to the organ donor registration process to help save more lives.

Sasha-Marie Gill, from Bacup, wants the current ‘opt in’ donor register system to be reversed to ‘opt out’, similar to the system in Wales.

The 27-year-old’s daughter, Harlee-Jae Procter, six, sufferers from a rare chromosome disorder ‘Biliary Atresia’.

The condition affects one in 15,000 children from birth and causes inflammation of the bile ducts, causing damage and scarring of the liver.

Harlee-Jae is currently on the organ donation list and has been for more a year.

The incurable disease means the Bacup Thorn Primary School pupil is on a special diet and constant medication to allow her to carry on with her daily life.

Ms Proctor said organs that are donated are never wasted.

She said: “I heard about a girl with the same condition ‘baby Sophie’, she managed to get a liver donation after waiting for a long time.

“Sadly, the operation was too late and was unsuccessful and Sophie lost her life.

“Hearing of her death put everything in perspective and made it all feel very real.

“People can be waiting too long for an organ, people need to get them as soon as they possibly can to increase their chances of survival.”

Since her diagnosis, Harlee-Jae has created a bucket list of all the things she wants to achieve and has been to Lapland, swam with dolphins and has been a zoo keeper for a day.

Currently in England and Scotland, people have to opt to join the organ donor list.

Wales changed its system in December 2015 so everyone is assumed on the list unless they decide to leave.

Ms Proctor said: “I’m not against people not wanting to go on the register, but I do believe a lot of people think there’s stigmas attached to it.

“I’ve heard a lot of people say ‘oh I have signed up something’s going to happen to me now’ but it’s not like that.

“At the moment it’s a quick process to register, but I want it to be even quicker.

“A family can go against the decision if they are really against their loved one being a donor once they’ve died so it’s not completely set in stone.” To join visit www.organdonation.nhs.uk
