The Pennine Lancashire Local Improvement Scheme for Cancer has had a big impact on cancer care.

Through delivering some large-scale events and engagement with the two Clinical Commissioning Groups and other partners, all 89 GP practices in the area now have a lead cancer GP and practice nurse.

The nurses are now competent to carry out cancer care reviews and more than 800 new reviews have already been taken.

Dr Smith received a certificate and £150 while his team received a plaque and £500.

Dr Smith is part of a team of 31 local Macmillan professionals supporting people affected by cancer. He said: “The simple message of my work has been ‘think cancer’. I was inspired by 20 years as a GP and being involved in the terrible outcomes that cancer can create, how it can devastate not only the lives of the patients but their carers.”
