HUNDREDS of people are expected to descend on an event aimed at raising awareness of Down’s Syndrome, inspired by a set of East Lancashire twins.

Abigail and Isobel Parry, aged three and from Chorley, were born with the genetic condition in 2011 at odds of two million to one, prompting their parents Matt and Jodi Parry to launch a charitable trust called Twincess.

Since then the family have organised a series of events to raise awareness of Down’s and provide a resource for families in the same situation, with the story attracting attention around the world.

In their latest effort, they are encouraging supporters to attend an It’s A Knockout event ‘with a difference’ in Chorley on Sunday.

Dad Matt said: “We’re hoping that more than 180 people will be taking part. We’re not trying to raise any money. The priority is to have a fun time and if we can raise some awareness about Down’s Syndrome then that will be a bonus.

“We’re very appreciative to Charnock Richard FC, who are providing their clubhouse and bar facilities free of charge. Parking is available opposite at Charnock Richard Cricket Club.

“The aim is to make it a family day with the word competition being used very loosely. Teams will have wide range of abilities, including children.”

Charnock Richard FC will hosting the free fun day on Sunday, May 24, between midday and 4pm.

So far 18 teams have registered to take part, with registration starting at 11am.

A team warm-up session will then be held by Preston-based DanceSyndrome.

Tommy Jessop, an actor with Down’s Syndrome, will be kicking off the fun at midday and will be joined by Chorley FC skipper Andy Teague.

Among the teams taking part will be Down’s Syndrome Liverpool and two teams from Ready Steady Down’s, a group based in St Helens.
