A man has appeared in court after an alleged attack on a man who tried to break up a domestic dispute outside Accrington Stanley's ground on Saturday.

Paul Warren Clifford, 36, of Edleston Street, Accrington, faced Blackburn magistrates charged with wounding Robert Taylor with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Bail for Clifford, who works for a roadlaying firm and as a part-time local football referee, was opposed by prosecutor Francis McEntee, during the brief hearing.

No plea was entered to the charge and he was remanded in custody pending a plea and case management hearing at Burnley Crown Court on July 11.
