PRIMARY school sets the foundations for everyone’s learning experiences.

The first seven years of a child’s life are crucial to their future development.

Learning to read, write, count and reason are the basic building blocks which form the foundations, not just of the rest of our education, but the whole of our lives.

School also teaches children how to work independently and as a team, and social skills.

As well as these fundamentals, a good primary also encourages flair and imagination in an atmosphere which youngsters enjoy as they mix with others.

That’s one of many reasons why the leadership of our primary schools is vital to our society.

The Lancashire Telegraph Primary Head teacher of the Year will be someone whose school embodies all of the above.

Key Stage Teacher Supply, sponsors of the category, said the importance of effective leadership was paramount.

Jane Scott, managing director, said: “When everyone pulls together under the leadership of an inspirational head teacher, schools can be very happy and productive environments for both students and staff.

“As role models to students in the first seven years of their learning, primary heads have a uniquely influential role to play in education.

“When they are at their most effective, they foster a love of learning that can last a lifetime .”

As well as classroom culture and achievement, judges will be looking for heads who make schools part of the community.

Nominations can come from governors, parents, community leaders or anyone who wants to give a head teacher recognition.
