TEACHING unions have welcomed plans to introduce a 'jargon buster' to help children understand social media terms and conditions.
Launched by the Children's Commissioner, the guide will be distributed to teachers and pupils across England.
Kevin Courtney, Joint General Secretary of the National Education Union, said: “The National Education Union welcomes the publication by the Children’s Commissioner of a ‘jargon buster’ to give children more power in our digital world. Social media and the internet offer great opportunities for children but there are pitfalls with children often unaware how social media companies collect and use their personal information.
“Rebalancing the power between social media companies and children in favour of children is a positive development that parents will support. Impenetrable small print is a challenge for adults, so it is no surprise that children often have absolutely no idea that they are giving away the right to privacy or the ownership of their data or the material they post online."
