A STUDENT was celebrating after scooping a host of awards at her college’s annual awards evening.

Shuttleworth College student Katie Barson got five A*s and five As in her GSCEs in August and collected awards for biology, chemistry, ECDL, English language, English literature, French, geography, maths, physical education, physics and religious education.

She won the best overall female exam results and, along with Jack Halstead, collected a special prize for 100 per cent attendance all the way through school, from year seven to 11.

Katie, who is now at Burnley College studying A-levels and hopes to study psychology at university, said she was “surprised” to have picked up so many awards.

Joshua Maddox, who is also studying at Burnley College, won the best overall male exam results while former head girl Anya Gillett won student of the year.

Headteacher Ruth England said: “This was for a strong all-rounder.

“It wasn’t just about exams, it included dedication to school life, enthusiasm and being an inspiration and role model to our younger students and Anya was just that.”

Gabriella Tuff received nine subject awards while Ryan Aspinall also collected seven subject awards.

The STEM award went to Jack Irving while Special Recognition Awards were presented to Anada Ashworth, Mehreen Asif, Yasser Baqi, Dale Benson, Lewis Bradley, Reece Hamilton, Conall Peel and Holly Reynolds, for their contribution to school life.

Mrs England said: “So many students worked incredibly hard to achieve the results they did and they deserve recognition.

“It was great to see them all again and catch-up with their progress.”

Special guests included the mayor and mayoress of Burnley and the mayor and mayoress of Padiham.
