New library service in North Turton to beat cuts

A NEW library service is to be piloted in North Turton to ensure residents still have access to books following budget cuts.

The 12-month pilot is being introduced after the mobile library was withdrawn in June as a result of the £33m cuts to Blackburn with Darwen Council’s budget.

As part of the scheme, a stock of 250 titles will be housed in a community building and volunteers will help monitor the loaning out of the books.

Every six weeks, 50 titles will be exchanged.

The previously established “At Home” service for the most vulnerable and housebound residents has also been extended.

Coun Damian Talbot said: “Following cuts to our budgets, the council has had to look at new ways of delivering our services.

“We want to work with local volunteers who can help us ensure that residents still have access to library books.

“Local people will be consulted as part of the trial to ensure their needs are met where possible.”
